Coco et Co – St. Denis

After a long Montreal winter, Coco et Co spent the spring months poaching old keyboards and yard sale records to serve as inspiration for their debut recording, St. Denis. A new, minimalist duet project for Andrew Sisk (Share, Sleepless Nights) and his musical partner, Miranda Durka; the duo wrote and recorded the album in their empty apartment on the street of the album’s namesake. Informed by the approach of Serge Gainsbourg, the spirit of Sade, and the mood of Low they limited their thoughtful songs to arrangements for drum machine, keys, guitar, and two voices.
Setting the pace to St. Denis is the mid-tempo meditation on literature and faith, “Stopped Reading.” While the tempo lifts on upbeat and steady songs like “Precious” and “Super“, which come across as melancholy celebrations, “State of Radio” reaches out to an audience of dejected friends. The eight songs act as a document of personal experience illustrated through tales of tailors, writers, wanderers, and murderers. St. Denis is an introduction of what is to come from this new group.
