Cursed Arrows – Death Rattle Blues
Heavy-hearted and misunderstood, Cursed Arrows is a gender-balanced poetic rock band that slaughters the conventions of two-piece acts. Aggressively melding post-grunge fury with sharp blasts of 70s-inspired sludge guitars and punch-to-the-gut drums, the husband and wife duo construct songs of murder, politics, love, unity, isolation and passion.
Their latest single, Death Rattle Blues, is the band’s first collection of recordings since relocating to Halifax, NS from Southern Ontario. The cassette’s title track captures soaring stoner-rock blues riffs and explosive leads all while finding ample space for the Ryan and Jackie Stanley’s gloomy pop vocal melodies.
Combined with two cover songs (Beck’s “Pay No Mind” and PJ Harvey’s “Rid of Me”) and two live acoustic songs, the single is a pre-cursor to Cursed Arrows’ upcoming full-length album The Madness Of Crowds, which will be released in the summer of 2011.
The bands last full-length album, Telpathic High Five (Noyes Records), received acclamations from critics in Canada and around the world including reviews from Puerto Rico’s Heavy Stoned and Doomed who compared Cursed Arrows songs to “a marvelous song structure combination between Nirvana and The Melvins, the stoney trips of The Flaming Lips, the heaviness of Black Sabbath, the voice of legendary Wendy O. Williams mutated with the L7 lead singer Donita Sparks, powerful groovy drumming and scratchy, phenomenal, well-executed guitar riffs that will get stuck in your mind” and the UK’s Collective Zine who said the band is “an utterly joyous duo of fuzzy post-grunge indie-rock babbling.”
