Gamma Gamma Rays – Beeps

Gamma Gamma Rays are a radioactive attempt at pop gone awry. Blending the tried-and-true styles of Halifax scrap-rock and pop sensibility, they create clamouring, occasionally frantic, but generally upbeat sounds and songs. The new line-up of five friends features a new and dynamically mature, dense sound with both major progressions in song structure and a departure from obvious arrangements.

Expanding on the melodic rumblings of their first effort, The World, Le Monde EP, their debut LP, Beeps, features eleven songs of organically orchestrated pop. Each song is layered as a tapestry with every instrument both contributing to the melody while simoultaneously struggling to be heard. This forces both male and female vocals to rise above the clutter and bring things back into focus (see track 4, “Focus”). Beeps makes use of both rock instrumentation as well as the unconvential appearances of flute and mandolin giving their songs a quality that must be provoked and prodded with repeat listens. Their songs range from spastic flailing rythmns (“Running Room”) to more subdued repetition (“Wildfire”) and juxtapositions of the two (“Blame”).

Having played to a variety of audiences across the maritimes they have had the oppurtunity to showcase their music alongside a diverse array of acts from Mt. Eerie to The Most Sere Republic and with this latest release they hope to push their music into new territory.
